Left LAX Hilton 8 AM - Doobin and Rob made there way back to New Jersey Via "Air Travel", Davis and Mr. Franklin continue road trip to San Francisco arrive 3 PM, Distance Travelled, approx. 400 Miles Waking up this morning was difficult, one because we had all gone to sleep around 2 AM, two it seems Rob is allergic to California and has developed some atrocious snoring habits, three because waking up and leaving the hotel meant ending Part One of what has thus far been an experience of a lifetime.
After packing our things and getting a quick bite to eat Davis and John Franklin said goodbye to Rob and Doobin as they boarded a shuttle for the airport. Fortunately since Davis will be rounding out his circumnavigation of the country by passing through New York City on the fourth of July weekend, it was only a very temporary farewell and therefore void of emotional hysterics...plus dudes never cry anyway ;)
(now ditching artificial third person narration)
My dad and I took Interstate 5 North to San Fran for a more direct route. The drive was for the most part void of any cities or towns. We simply passed hundreds of miles of fruit and nut groves, which are apparently experiencing a water crisis caused by congress (info provided by a plethora of angry signs along the roadside near dead, abandoned orchards). However where the trees were alive it was a breathtaking sight. (Notice artificial concrete irrigation river in image)
We had planned to visit Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, however very intense traffic crossing into the city prevented us from catching our boat so we instead made our way to a flat belonging to one of my dad's friends, unloaded or things and began our forty minute walk to Haight-Ashbury. (I know been there twice now, but it is super cool and last time we just took a picture and bounced)
My dad despite having visited San Fran six or seven times had never visited this neighborhood, the focal point of American 1960's counterculture. He had a great time and felt right at home amongst the head shops and giant murals of Bob Marley.
But seriously, he did have a good time and we got some great t-shirts for friends and family back east. After grabbing a couple burgers and organic beers at People's Cafe we trekked back to the flat
and then to a nearby art theater (a very classy one by the way on the corner of Post and Fillmore) to see... wait for it...Tree of Life...AGAIN!!!

My dad had never seen it before and a visit to the movies seemed like a better idea than Saturday night bar hopping with just my old man (no matter how cool and hip he is).
Bar Hopping will be reserved for Portland, Oregon (the beer capital of the world, be jealous all you cities in Germany and Central Europe) when another pledge bro, Michael Shiplet, teams up with the Franklin dudes for a night on the town.
This time the theater was sold out and I enjoyed it just as much if not more. On the walk back to the flat we discussed how the movie is really about the same thing as the Biblical book of Job, we will never understand life until we look back on it from some world beyond our own or get a momentary glimpse of divine perspective (thanks Prof Brown for the Christian Mysticism class and Prof Conner for two sections of Bible as English Lit.)
Now going to sleep in a bed by myself for the first time since Houston, although I can't complain, Rob was an excellent bedfellow.
the jersey boys are still with me in spirit
peace and love
the three dudes (plus another dude)
