Days 22 and 23

Day 22. Left Portland, Oregon around 9:30 AM. Arrived in Seattle, Washington around 12:30 PM Pacific Time. Distance approx. 170 Miles.

Leaving Portland was tough since we had really spent so little time in the city and it seemed like such a great place, however Davis and Mike had to head out pretty early in order to get to Seattle in time to have lunch with Fraternity Brother and teammate Kane Thomas. We said goodbye to John Franklin and hit Interstate 5 heading north.

The drive was pretty uneventful and we arrived at the Thomas residence around 12:30 and had a great lunch consisting of tuna melt's and caesar salad prepared by Kane's brother, Henry, an aspiring chef.

After lunch Kane began our tour of Seattle. For about the first hour of the tour we were basically just sitting in traffic but eventually we got a neighborhood called "Capitol Hill" the center of LGBT culture in the city. They were getting ready for their Pride parade later this week and I have never seen such a concentration of Rainbow flags in my life.

Davis finally got his chance to eat some sushi on the west coast in Capitol Hill and was not disappointed with the quality. He also used his chopsticks with only one mishap...HURRAY!!!

Next Kane took us to the Fish Market down by the water where Davis recognized a Turkish Delight store he had been too roughly 15 years ago when he was enchanted with the store because of its tenuous connection to "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" by C.S Lewis. Of course we stopped in and got some delicious candy before buying a few souvenirs in the Market.

After hitting up the market we went to the Biggest REI store either of us had ever seen. Shiplet got himself a watchband, a space pen, and a knot tying game for the car. Davis got a knife, new hipster/ hiking shoes, and also fell for the knot game in the checkout line.

We rounded out our evening of Seattle activities by seeing the group Viva Voce perform free in a record store, ate at Dick's burgers (Seattle's Five Guys/ In-N-Out) and saw the movie "I Am Hannah" at a 3 dollar theater by Kane's House.

Day 23

Left Seattle 10:30 Pacific Time. Arrived Missoula, Montana 8:30 Mountain Time. distance approx. 480 miles.

We woke up fairly early in Seattle and had a satisfying breakfast at a local pancake place with Kane and his family (who showed us another great glimpse into world of welcoming West Coast hospitality). We basically just drove for the rest of the day, taking turns at the wheel and enjoying the great views of the Cascade Mountains.
After getting lunch at a Subway in the middle of nowhere we hit the desert of eastern Washington which we were not really aware even existed. Davis passed out as Mike passed the time chillin' out to some Iron and Wine (folk band from Florida...check them out).

After we got the Spokane Davis took the wheel, which turned out to be a bad idea. About an hour and a half later in western Montana we hit some construction where the speed limit dropped from 75 to 50 mph. Davis remained at a steady 70 mph which brought on the attention of a state police officer. Davis pulled over calmly and then got pretty nervous as he realized that he was driving without a license and could not find his registration or proof of insurance. Fortunately the officer was a very understanding guy, got all the info he needed from Davis' passport and let us off with a 75 dollar fine for speeding and warnings for not being able to find any of the material he had asked for (we later found both the registration and the proof of insurance).

Shiplet played some Mandolin in the car to calm Davis' nerves until we arrived in Missoula for the night.
In Missoula we got some local beers and fish entrees at Tamarack Brewery and hit up our hotel for the night. Tomorrow we meet up with Davis' old Youth Minister and his family in Big Timber, Montana.

Peace and Love

the two dudes
